Quaint Italian Bistro

This is the last Tree rerun. Tree is no longer. Thanks for sticking around. Check out my new strip, Stewart.

A bison in San Francisco

November 1st, 2007

My new comic strip, Stewart, is now up and running. It’s about a bison who lives in San Francisco. Check it out.

Although Tree is over and there will be no more Tree-runs, this site will remain up at least through the end of the year. Maybe longer.

The new strip is coming next week

October 26th, 2007

My new strip, “Stewart,” is launching next Wednesday, October 31.  While you’re scarfing Halloween candy, stop on by The Panel Mammals. The link to Stewart will be posted there, along with a shamelessly self-promotional blog post about the strip.

No Tree strip posted today because I had internet problems at home last night and this morning (It’s Comcastic!). The last Treerun will be posted here on Monday. Have a good weekend.

The end of Tree, but the start of something new

September 28th, 2007

I’ve recently decided to end Tree. I’ve come to this decision for two main reasons:

1. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had this nagging feeling that Tree isn’t the strip I should be doing. I like it but it doesn’t feel quite right. Mainly it comes down to the whole talking tree thing. I love Tree the character, but it’s a tough sell and that’s always been an issue with me.

2. I’ve recently received some feedback from a few important people in the industry. They confirmed my suspicions about Tree not being marketable and strongly suggested I try another feature. This feedback about Tree, along with my own doubts about its marketability, can’t be ignored. All signs point to doing something new.

I enjoy drawing cartoons for the web but my main goal is syndication and I have to stay true to that. So it’s time to move on. Starting today, I will be rerunning old strips every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have just started working on ideas for a new strip and the Tree reruns (Tree-runs?) will be posted here for a couple months, until the new strip is unveiled on The Panel Mammals site.

I’ve been working on Tree since mid-2005 so ending it is not something I take lightly. It was a tough decision to make. I appreciate my fellow Mammals’ support through this transition.

To those of you who were fans, thank you for your feedback and kind words. I am considering putting out a Tree collection and if I go through with that I’ll post something here about it. Please stay with me and, again, thanks for following Tree. As much as I hate to let this strip go, I am excited about doing something new. I am working to make a much better strip—it just won’t have the fresh pine scent.

    Expanded archive!

    September 3rd, 2007

I’ve added strips to the archive so feel free to check it out. There are still plenty more strips to add and I’m doing it in stages. In the meantime, you can read the following storylines from a couple months back:

Tree goes on the Dr. Paul Show

Claire and her ex-husband, Clarence, run into each other at Bovine Barn

Claire goes to the annual “Dairy Producing Professionals Conference”

In other website news, this site will soon undergo a transformation (related to The Panel Mammals). It will look a lot slicker and cooler. All the credit for the new web design goes to Jim Tierney of Jet Packs and Time Machines.

    Stay tuned.

    Spreading the word

    August 15th, 2007

If you’d like to tell others about Tree, an easy way to do it is through the “Share This” button below each post. It’s a quick way to spread the word to various sites. Or just click the “email” tab and before you know it, you are emailing Tree to your spouse or your friend or that guy Chester in Accounts Payable.

Show people you care with Tree-mail.

We tested that slogan with focus groups and they all thought it was lame. I don’t care. I’m sticking with it. It might even become a bumper sticker.

Announcement! Tree is also a Mammal!

    August 13th, 2007

I’m proud to say that Tree is part of a brand new comics website called “The Panel Mammals.” The other three cartoonists/comic strips are:

Jim Tierney — Jet Packs and Time Machines

Jarrett Osborne — The Pursuit of Mandy

    Mike Witmer — Pinkerton

The four of us are joining together to entertain, make jokes and do other cartoon-related things that are yet to be announced. Our goal is to make The Panel Mammals an interesting and interactive website. Our motto (”An evolution in cartooning…eventually”) pretty much sums it up—we hope The Panel Mammals will evolve into something really great. And we need your help to do it.

To find out more, visit the site and read the “Mammal Manifesto.”

    www.thepanelmammals.com

I look forward to seeing you at The Panel Mammals and TreeComic.com. (Tree’s new schedule is Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.) Thanks for reading.

    A hiaitus before an evolution

    July 31st, 2007

Tree is on vacation. He is currently enjoying fun and sun in an undisclosed location. He is drinking those fruity drinks with umbrellas in them.

Tree will be back on Monday, August 13 with an announcement that will make you stop and say, “Cool.”

An evolution in cartooning is coming and I am proud to say Tree is part of it. The announcement will be made on August 13. See you then.

    Launch of Treecomic.com!

    July 14th, 2007

Tree now has its own site! Huge thanks to Jim Tierney (cartoonist of Jet Packs and Time Machines) for showing me the way, helping me put this together. Jim, you rock. I suggest checking out his comic strip immediately.

    A strip about a Tree?

Yes, Tree is about a walking, talking, dim-witted pine tree. But it also features a cranky cow named Claire Holstein and a laid-back cafe owner named Wyatt Wickersham. Also featured are goats, ducks, yuppies, hippies, and random weirdos. New strips on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Stick around. I hope you enjoy it.
